Bailenson describes how avatars are changing the social world.
Summarizing a number of psychological experiments conducted at Stanford’s Virtual Human Interaction Lab, he demonstrates that avatars change who we are in “the first world”. For example, spending time in
an avatar can alter people’s memory, self esteem, interpersonal,
skills, exercise habits, and purchasing decisions. Social identity
has a different meaning online and small time spent in an avatar can
have drastic effects
